    I love a good greasy spoon to the point where I often go out Saturdays and hunt them. (I scour Yelp for them too, please send your suggestions) These places produce some of the best breakfast around. So, I was psyched to find the Steak and Sack while on drive about. I was SO disappointed by it though. I got their signature sandwich, steak-in-a-sack (How could I not?) Ugh! Not good. It was chewy overcooked meat on a pita. They had promised "home made Arabian bread" on the sign over the kitchen, but it was clearly a stale store-bought pita. This would be totally forgivable if it tasted good. It did not. The meat was chewy overcooked gristle that in skilled hands could have been transformed into tender Philly cheese steak style sandwich. au contraire. It had the requisite grease, but resembled in both taste and smell the kind of left overs that dogs reject. It was served with a side of shredded white iceberg lettuce and unripened tomatoes topped with a healthy smear of mayonnaise that was designed to be ignored. My sig other got the chipped beef over toast (Told you we like greasy spoon food). Here you expect a mess of nasty gravy over white toast and they did not disappoint. Only, the bread was stale again making it hard to eat even when smothered in gravy WTF! How do you mess up a dish that is SUPPOSED to be nasty? I just can't recommend even trying this place. FAIL.

    This is truly a "HOLE IN THE WALL" spot....I think they have finally kicked the bucket and closed down because there NEVER open!!!! I go to the chinese spot next door all the time but I don't know when the last time I have seen this place open..... They could and have the potenital of being a really cool spot to come to when you want something greasy, quick with a desent taste to it. I use to come here alot especially in the mornings on Saturdays for some good ole Steak & Eggs and a Lemonade Ice Tea Mix (DC's Finest)

    Greasy Spoon! I really like greasy spoons for breakfast. There's something about the way they do breakfast. I really think it's just...eh grease and butter. Those weekends in southeast bring limited choices when I can't get the beau to cook. However, when the gang mentions Steak in a Sack I'm all ears. This is a rather small place in the Marlowe Heights shopping center that has been around for 30 years. The name comes from their signature sandwich which is a steak sandwich in pita bread or a "sack". They fall just short of claiming they invented the pita according to the sign on the wall. I've never had the signature sandwich but I've been to this place many times for breakfast. There is usually a short wait as this place is very popular among the locals in PG County. I usually order the salmon cakes with eggs. The salmon cakes are a little on the dry side but I don't really care because they taste so good. Everyone is full and satiated after we leave here so we take a nap until the Redskins are set to play. The only thing they really lack is service. A few of the veteran waitresses are good but the younger ones don't know what they are doing.

    Interesting little meat and three, diner style restaurant at the end of the strip mall. When I walked in for the first time I thought I had stepped back into the 70's. I loved the feel. I have sense been here about 3 times. The food is good. Nothing to blow your socks off, but it is solid. Prices are pretty good. Maybe a hair steep, but nothing that will turn you away. Stop in and see for yourself.

    On the advice of a good friend, she suggested getting breakfast on the fly as it were. Well the order was called in, and 20 minutes later we arrived. Let me say first they are in a open small shopping center so parking not a problem unless you wait til 11:00 am then all bets are off. The place to say the least was crowded from the door to counter people waiting to place orders and pick up. The cooking area is in the open the grill and cooks you see them prepare and serve the food. The dining area seats about 20 in the old fashioned diner sense of the word. The entire staff seemed intent on doing and taking care of business....the customers! The kitchen area from a glance was suitably clean not grease on the floor, no dirty counter-tops, glassware was clean no spots, utensils were clean. The staff at the counter was run by family, the owner was present and greeted my friend as a long standing customer by name! Busy isn't the word I would use, they are in constant over drive! The food was most excellent, I had gotten an egg and bacon sandwich on whole wheat.. It was done as I ordered, no grease no slipping off the bread mess. I also got home fries while waiting ( they looked on so good on the grill cooking). The atmosphere was pleasant and family oriented quite lively and friendly. I wouldn't say that this is the place for everyone....tastes vary. But as for service, quality and a warm smile for a moderate price....go for it!

    Me and the hubby went here since we had not been since the last review and I have to say...I was MAD disappointed. No one wanted to serve us, and when we got menus, the prices had been whited out and raised! High as hell! Come on son! We paid almost $40 for breakfast for 2! We could've gone in the city, or even a champagne brunch for this price. Steak in a Sack...yall tripping. And we are not coming with ya.

    "When we first started," says the owner, motioning all around, "all this was nothing but trees." Apparently Steak in a Sack has been serving pita-pocket cheesesteaks in Suitland for just shy of 50 years now. Bonus point of interest: The titular "sack" refers to the pita pockets. (Yeah, it could've been much worse.) The place is a friendly, greasy little diner and they serve up some pretty tasty all-day breakfast and butter-drenched sandwiches. It's a little more expensive than we expected from Suitland, but I don't feel like I overpaid. We'll definitely be going back before month's end -- I've got my eye on the Twin Dooley (two hamburger patties, eggs, cheese, etc. stuffed in a pita sack). Mmm boy.

    The food is gross and too expensive for the actual quality my eggs were runny and my steak was basically a steak-em that i could've bought from the grocery store the waiters were arguing and calling each other niggers and spics after i got my food i sat outside in my car and just fed that crap to the birds, they barely ate it... But on the flip side the grits weren't terrible

    I don't know how this place stays in business. The food is horrible and it's dirty as hell. It's time to give this restaurant to a new business who actually cares about what they are feeding their paying customers. Beware!

    Probably not the newest place in town, but has LOTS of character. Certainly better tasting food than the corporate restaurants. Step back into 1970 and enjoy home cooked food.

    After making a presentation at the National Harbor, my boss knew just where to go to feed my tummy. This is a small, down home joint. We got some stares when four men and a lady all walked in, all business suit-ed up and wearing long black coats. My boss is / was a regular, so we were greeted with pleasantries and our orders promptly taken. I had turkey bacon, two eggs over medium, home fries and toast. The eggs were cooked just right--the yolk was cooked around the edges, and slightly runny in the middle. The turkey bacon was realllly good (made me wonder which brand they use so I could buy some instead of the one I usually buy). The home fries were a disappointment for me, but that would be because they were "soft". They were not fries, per se, but cut up potatoes that were pan fried with some seasonings. The taste was good, but I prefer 'em crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. No big deal, I ate some of it anyway. This big breakfast was reasonably priced at somewhere around $6.50. The lady who served us (I presume is the owner) was a real doll. Parking is not too bad; we were there at a good time, but the lot seems big enough that you could find a place to park regardless of the day or time of day.

    This place doesn't look like much from the outside. The proverbial whole in the wall. However if you want a delicious "greasy spoon" experience, this is THE spot to hit in Marlow Heights, MD. My family loves this spot for breakfast. You can call in and take it back home or if you get in early enough grab a spot at the bar or a booth. Some of our favorites are the Hot Cakes special, the Western Omelet and the Steak & Eggs. If you get that be prepared to be stuffed to the gills with thinly sliced rib eye steak with onions (they add a heavenly steak sauce to this too!), eggs ( anyway you like) home fries (yeah fried potatoes with onions) and toast. The servings are huge! The staff are friendly neighborhood folk and the food is delicious (did I already say that?). You won't be disappointed, you will over eat so pace yourself! The only reason why they aren't getting 5 stars is because it's small, and quite busy at times. This is a great family owned neighborhood spot. Not a chain, not a gourmet spot either just REALLY good food and really good service.

    5-stars for longevity and being a Marlow Heights institution. I have been going to SIAS since 1973 when I was a junior in high school going there on my dinner break when I worked at Hechts (now Macys). Their namesake Steak in A Sack is as flavorful, delicious and filling as it gets; sliced rib eye cooked to perfection and very well seasoned with their special spices. . If you can get a seat at one of the front booths or better yet at the counter so you can see the short order cooks working their magic. The staff is beyond friendly and accomodating offering excellent service whether breakfast or lunch. Everyone comes here; businessmen, locals, and service folks from nearby Andrews AFB. I love this place!

    I knew it was going to be a bad experience when I first walked into this place and seen a patron arguing with a waiter over service. I should have turned around and went elsewhere. But I was hungry and was hoping this spot would a good place to grab breakfast on this side of the DMV (East of the River, PG County near DC). I ordered my food and it took well over 40 minutes for it to come. Now the place was almost packed, but I had never waited that long in a crowded IHOP. When my food finally came, I asked her what took so long. She barked, "We are busy, what do you expect?!" I wanted to roll out after that response, but I was so hungry, I want to eat more so than argue. I had asked her to scrambled my eggs and cook them hard. They were the total opposite. They were so "runny," I could almost drink them. I just got fed up and paid for my meal. I walked out without finishing it. Maybe a once in a blue moon bad experience here. But it was enough for me.

    I love greasy spoons. The food here is plenty greasy, but not particularly tasty. I added a star because the wait staff is exceptionally sweet, friendly and pleasant, but honestly, this place doesn't do it for me. Decor is NOT why I go to diners, but the stall seats with cracked pleather and foam spilling out are really unsanitary and unattractive. I had a spinach-bacon omelette that was ok. The home fries were just potato cubes in a lot of grease - no crispy bits to be found :-( They earn half a star for decent coffee (refills included) and real half & half served in a creamer. The menu refers in multiple places to the homemade pita bread. One good look around and I was sure this could not be true. When the owner introduced himself (they really are quite friendly here), I asked him about the pita and he admitted that they no longer bake it. $15 for breakfast in a pretty lousy location and bad home fries does not add up to a return visit.

    Very busy spot for breakfast. The food was ok with few highlights other than the French toast and pancakes. The cash machine outside should have been a hint that it was cash only. Unfortunately the atm fee was 3.50 compared to the grocery store next doors 2.50. The food was not fast so plan to stay a while once you do get a seat. This place is, "neighborhood appropriate."

    Solid "hole in the wall", although I suppose the idea of such seems a bit oxymoronic. But this is definitely a no frills kind of breakfast. So no frills in fact, you'll feel little pressure to even change out of your pajamas before coming here. And you won't be alone. The table next to you will be occupied with cute women with hearty appetites still in their head wraps. And a few rejects from America's Next Top Bottom Bish. Therefore, I'm extremely comforted by the fact that a good portion of the kitchen is within view of the customer. I do not want to assume that the lax atmosphere transcends to the cleanliness. But beware that the site and smell of another's breakfast cooking, will probably coax you to stay in spite of some clear wait service mishaps, nothing even remotely close to decor or ambiance, and some of the sketchier patrons. This is not momma's kitchen. You will not feel at home. Far from it. The friendliest guy here is the one who takes your money. And at that point, it is a wee late. Though lacking in charm and hair under their hair nets, waitresses here do not lack efficiency. There are probably about 20 tables here total. If that. And 6 to 10 staffers floating around wiping, clearing, or waiting on your order. Even if they take a little while to get to you, patience is a virtue! The food reminds me a bit of downhome. Boyfriend is a huge fan of the salmon cakes. I've spread my Love around the menu a bit more. Right now, a consistent favorite is the homefries with peppers and onions. Pancakes are nothing to fawn over so get the French toast. With any meal actually, replace the reg toast for French toast for $2 extra. Make yourself the perfect breakfast combo. The cheese eggs are just like my mother makes them. From the skillet look to the equal distribution of cheesiness throughout, there's nothing restaurant about these eggs. I want to not eat it all. But who wraps up breakfast to go? There is a certain comfortability that comes with this no frills environment. Or maybe tackiness is contagious. Either way you won't have a problem cleaning your plate. And letting it all hang out. So go ahead and loosen that top button. Or better yet, just come in sweat pants. Be prepared to pay anywhere from $8-19 per person including drinks. It is simply up to you. Some menu items come sporting a decent price tag while others are extremely affordable (get 2 HUGE breakfast sandwiches for $6). Come hungry and with no desire to cook or go to IHOP, leave happy!

    I know this place has been here for about 50 years and you can tell that by just walking in the door but the owner is really friendly and the breakfast is pretty amazing! Yes, you can go in your pajamas but thats a good thing in my book becuase they give you so much food you might want to wear pants with elastic waist band. I highly recommend this place for breakfast! Yummy! If you don't like greasy food you just have to ask them to cook it with very light butter and then the food is really out of this world! Oh, and they are finally taking credit cards!!! Credit cards now accepted for those of you who did not know that!!

    This is horrible.. Gave me an eery feeling as soon as I walked in..I've learned never judge a book by it's cover.. Some of the most uninvited places have the best food but the food is just as horrible as the atmosphere.. I will not be returning to this place.. They don't deserve any stars in my book!
